Invoice checker

Take your latest invoice and tick what it actually shows. You get a score against the MRA's required particulars for a VAT invoice. Nothing you tick leaves this page.

Your score0 / 10

This wouldn't survive an audit.

Still missing:

  • The words "VAT INVOICE" displayed prominently
  • Your business name and address
  • Your VAT Registration Number
  • Your Business Registration Number (BRN)
  • A serial (sequential) invoice number
  • The date of issue
  • Quantity and description of the goods or services
  • The value of the supply, and whether it is subject to VAT
  • The VAT amount shown separately, with the rate applied
  • VAT-registered customer? Their name, address, BRN and VAT number

There is more than tidiness at stake. Section 56 of the VAT Act makes issuing a VAT invoice without the required particulars an offence, with a fine of up to Rs 50,000 on conviction. In practice the MRA starts by asking you to fix your paperwork, but the cheapest time to get it right is before the invoice goes out.

Not VAT-registered? Then most of this list doesn't apply to you: no "VAT INVOICE" heading, no VAT number, no VAT line. But your BRN must still appear on every invoice you issue, along with your business name, an invoice number and a date. Good habits now make VAT registration painless later.
