Do I need to charge VAT?
You must register for VAT with the MRA once your annual taxable turnover exceeds Rs 3 million. The threshold dropped from Rs 6 million on 1 October 2025, so many freelancers and small traders are newly in scope. Below the threshold you can register voluntarily (useful if your customers are VAT-registered businesses that want to recover input VAT).
Not everything carries 15%: exports and basic foodstuffs are zero-rated, and things like residential rent, banking and medical services are exempt.
What a VAT invoice must contain
Once registered, the MRA requires every VAT invoice to show:
- The words "VAT INVOICE" in a prominent place
- Your name, business address, VAT Registration Number and BRN
- A serial number and the date of issue
- Quantity and description of the goods or services
- The value of the supply and whether it is subject to VAT
- The VAT amount shown separately, with the rate applied
- If your customer is VAT-registered: their name, address, BRN and VAT number
Our free invoice generator produces exactly this layout, so you don't have to remember the list.
